The Most Stolen Vehicles (Updated for 2019)

Most Stolen Vehicles in 2018

In 2018, the FBI reported that a vehicle is stolen every 42.25 seconds. That means that over 740,000 cars are stolen every year! Within the last 10 years, car thefts have actually risen. Oddly enough, it’s actually because of new technology, as drivers are forgetting their key-less FOBs inside their vehicles. Most cars built within the last 5 years now come with push-button start, which means most drivers need to be more careful now than ever.

Thieves aren’t going after high-end, new, or expensive cars. They’re actually targeting vehicles with the least amount of security. Most thieves will take stolen vehicles for their resale value, or to sell for parts to garages and junkyards. This is why late 90’s and early 2000’s Honda’s and Hyundai’s often take the top spot in stolen vehicle lists. We’ve compiled a list of the most stolen vehicles from 2018.

How Can I Prevent Vehicle Theft?

There are several precautionary steps you can take towards keeping your vehicle safe. This includes slowing down and even stopping thieves from taking off with your car. Check out these tips on how to prevent your vehicle from being stolen:

  1. Lock your car at all times, even when driving
  2. Remember to fully close all windows and doors when leaving your car
  3. Never leave your key inside your car, or leave your car running while unattended
  4. Park in well-lit areas, and be aware of your surroundingsMost
  5. Avoid leaving valuables in your car or keep them hidden in the trunk
  6. Install anti-theft systems and etch your vehicle identification number (VIN) into your car
  7. Turn your wheels towards a curb, as it makes it harder for tow trucks

You can also purchase several anti-theft and warning devices to prevent theft. Purchasing these items may also decrease your car insurance premium.

Warning Devices

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) recommends installing these devices to ensure that thieves are deterred from going anywhere near your car, or have a harder time getting into it:

  • Car alarms (be sure to display the decals too!)
  • Steering column collars
  • Steering hooks or locks
  • Brake and wheel locks

Immobilizing devices

The NICB also recommends using devices that will prevent thieves from hot-wiring your vehicle. Some of these devices require an additional “hidden switch” installation before you can start the car:

  • Smart keys
  • Fuse cut-offs
  • Kill switches
  • Starter, ignition, and fuel pump disablers
  • Wireless ignition authentication

Tracking Devices

If you already had your car stolen, own a commonly stolen car, or live in an area with a lot of car theft, install a tracking device to monitor your car via GPS. You’ll be alerted if your vehicle is moved, so you know when your car is stolen.

If you do come in contact with a car thief, do not approach them — instead, call the authorities immediately. Insurance will help cover the cost of a stolen vehicle, but you cannot be replaced. Your safety is what matters most.
