Michigan Changes Effective July 2, 2020
Michigan is a no-fault state. This means that regardless of who causes an accident, each driver’s own personal injury protection (also referred to as PIP) coverage handles their own damages. As of July 2, 2020, drivers may opt out of the unlimited PIP coverage for the minimum coverage of:- Up to $500,000 personal injury protection coverage or,
- $50,000 personal injury protection coverage for drivers on Medicaid
Michigan As a No-Fault State
Although you might want to opt-out of your personal protection coverage when the state allows it, you may want to think twice. Remember that this coverage will handle all your personal injury losses in an accident. This includes:- Medical bills
- Prescription drugs
- Physical and mental therapy
- Specialists visits
- Wages lost
What Your Insurance Should Cover
Drivers should remember that even though Michigan only requires a certain amount of minimum coverage, that coverage may not be enough. If you cause an accident that injures multiple people, you could face up to millions of dollars worth of damages. In Michigan, the state minimum coverage does not cover:- Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage
- Uninsured motorist property damage
- Additional medical coverage
- Comprehensive coverage
- Collision coverage
- Rental car reimbursement
- Roadside assistance
